Students interested
in working in our Learning Resource Center (LRC) at Holy Cross College
should fill out an application to be a peer tutor in The Writing Center
or The Math Center.Teacher or advisor
recommendation is required, as is a minimum overall GPA and a higher minimum
GPA in the area in which you will tutor. You
may access an application to print off and fill out by clicking on the
button above.
Students who wish
to become peer tutors are encouraged to enroll in our tutor-training course, “Theory
and Practice of Peer Tutoring”. This two-credit hour
class, transferable to many other colleges, is taught during the fall semester. One
of the requirements of the class is that students volunteer a minimum of
three hours per week in the Learning Resource Center. When
a student successfully completes this course, along with minimum requirements
of actual tutoring time, he will be granted International Tutoring Certification,
Level I from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).This
certification is recognized at many four-year colleges and universities
throughout our country. Each semester, there
are some students who would like to tutor math in the LRC but are unable
to fit the tutor-training course into their schedules. These
students are individually provided with a handbook and adequate personal
training, and are monitored closely for progress. They
will receive a Holy Cross College Certificate of Recognition at
semester’s end, but cannot earn CRLA certification.
