RELATIONSHIP

If discussing a relationship, use the following possible questions for chapter two.

    1.  Describe your communication behavior with this person, giving examples of how
         a.  You deliver "booster" and "buster" message to each of them
         b.  You create self-fulfilling prophecies that work for and against each of them
         c.  How your communication with him/her affects their behaviors.

    2.  Describe a recent self-fulfilling prophecy which you have imposed upon yourself
         that affects your communication with this significant other.
         a.  In what cases have you imposed it?
         b.  What have the results been?
         c.  How realistic was the prophecy?

    3.  Describe a self-fulfilling prophecy you have imposed upon the other person.
        a.  How did you communicate it (i.e., what messages did you send, and what channels
             did you use?)
        b.  What effect did your prophecy have upon your partner?
 

CULTURE

If you are using another culture, here are some possible questions for discussion.

    1.  In the culture you have chosen to evaluate/discuss, what has contributed to their self-concept?
         a.  How is it different from your own?
         b.  How identified with their own culture (ethnic background) are they?

    2.  Describe the culture -- individualistic or collective;  male-dominated or democratic; style of
         communication etc.

    3.  We have certain expectations which are a product of our prejudices.  How do you think these
         self-fulfilling prophecies have affected groups of people?  For instance, how have our self-
         fulfilling prophecies affected Afro-Americans, Chicanos, women, college students, or the
         elderly -- center on the group of people that you are using in your portfolio.

    4.  How do they manage their impressions?  How are they different from your own?
