Possible questions to use for portfolio:

RELATIONSHIP

Using the characteristics of "Communication competence: What makes an effective communicator?" disscuss the following concepts.

    1.  Evaluate your communication competence in the context of one interpersonal relationship in
         in which you are involved.
         a.  Discuss the range of behaviors in which you engage.
        b.  Discuss your ability to choose the most appropriate behavior.
        c.  Discuss your skill in performing certain behaviors.
        d.  and discuss your commitment to the relationship.

Be sure to discuss this relationally, involving the behaviors of the other person, and how you adapt or fail to adapt to them.

    2.  Discribe the significant other that you will use for your portfolio.
        a.  What behaviors does this person perform?
        b.  Describe how this person fulfills your social needs, practical needs, etc.
        c.  What type of control is experienced in this relationship?
 

Culture

If you are using antoher culture for your portfolio, use these as possible questions for discussion.

    1.  Describe the culture that your are using for your portfolio.
        a.  Discuss the concept of control within this culture.
        b.  Are the communication skills the same?

    2.  Describe this culture in relationship to the transactional model of communication described in
         chapter one.

    3.  What needs   appear to be important to this culture?  How are they fulfilled?

    4.  If using an individual from another culture, discuss the acculturation ( the additive process in
          which the person takes on a new culture and cultural persona while maintaining the old self).
         In the past, many non-native U.S. citizens sought assimilation rather than acculturation.
         Assimilation is a process inwhich the learner cuts off all ties with his old culture in order to
         become totally identified and absorbed into the new culture.  How has this affected his
         motivation and expectation in relation to communication?
