The following schedule of classes and quizzes is tentative depending upon material covered in discussions.  All quizzes will be after chapter material is discussed.

 

Week 1  January 15-17

Scope and organization of course

Discussion of the communication process, chapter 1, A First Look at Interpersonal Relationships

Assignment:  read chapter 1 and chapter 2, Communication and the Self

Always read chapters before discussion in class.  It is difficult to discuss anything without prior knowledge.

 

January 18  Last Day to drop/add a class

 

Week 2  January 22-24

Finish discussion of chapter 1 and discuss chapter 2, Communication and the Self

Quiz 1,  chapter 1  Quiz on each chapter will follow the chapter discussion.  Dates of quizzes may vary depending upon the length of the chapter discussion.

 

Week 3  January 29-31

Discussion of chapter 2

Assignment:  Read chapter 3, Perception

 

Week 4, February 5-7

Quiz 2, chapter 2

Discussion of chapter 3, Perception: What You See is What You Get

Research Paper due Thursday March  20.  Topics can be found on the website and in the syllabus

 

Week 9  March 18-20

Finish chapter 5, Language

Quiz 5, chapter 5

Discuss Chapter 6, Nonverbal Communication

Assignment:  Read chapter 7, Listening

Thursday, Research Papers due.  There is a 5 point penalty for each day late.

 

Week 10  March 25-27

Quiz 6, chapter 6

Discuss chapter 7, Listening

Assignment:  Read chapter 8, Intimacy and Distance

 

Week 11  April 1-3

Finish Listening

Begin chapter 8, Intimacy and Distance

Portfolio due April 24 – Begin working on them.  Possible portfolio questions can be found at the website under Portfolio. Questions are posted for each chapter.  Oral Reports begin on research papers during the following weeks.  A few will be given at each class period.  Students will volunteer as to date of delivery.  You must have handed-in a research paper to present an oral report.

 

Week 12  April 8-10

Finish Listening.  Take-home quiz given out.

Discuss Chapter 8

Quiz 8, chapter 8  This is a take-home paper that will also qualify as the chapter 8 for the portfolio.

Assignment:  Read chapter 9 and 10.  There will be no in-class  quiz for these chapters.  The material will be included in the final exam.

 

Week 13 April 15-17

Finish chapter 8, begin chapter 9, Improving Communication Climates

Personal Portfolio of Reflective Essays due on April 24 which includes Intimacy paper for Chapter 8 quiz.  Directions in syllabus and on website.

 

Week 14  April 24-26

Discussion of Chapter 9.  Portfolio due April 24.  Five points assessed for each day late.

 

Week 15  april 29-May 1

Finish discussions of chapters 9 and chapter 10

 

 

Final Exam is Tuesday, May 6 at 12:30 pm in the regular classroom.

 

You are exempt from the final if you haven’t been absent or tardy for the semester.
