1. The student will be able to: Speak effectively.
The student will learn this skill by: delivering
5 extemporaneous speeches that are clear, simple,
and logical.
I will assess this by: grading the actual
presentation of speeches. There will be a videotaped
self-analysis sbased upon criteria published in syllabus, the textbook
and on the website.
The evidence of the student's skill achievement is: A
grade of "C" or above on the individual
speeches that are extemporaneous, structured correctly and delivered with
confidence.
2. The student will be able to: Prepare and deliver effective oral presentations.
The students will learn this skill by: Presentation
of 5 speeches, each 3 to 5 minutes in
length, with no more than 3 major points, having an introduction, conclusion
and appropriate
structure including a thesis statement.
I will assess this by: Grading the outlines
for individual speeches that are susbmitted at the
time of the speech. Each presentation must fulfill the criteria for
an effective oral presentation.
Quizzes will be given over the course of the semester.
The evidence of the student's skill achievement is: The
actual outline that is submitted and it
receives a grade of "C" or above. A grade of 75% or above on the
quizzes. The deliverance
of the speech earning a grade of "C" or above.
3. The student will be able to: Accurately gauge audience dynamics.
The students will learn this skill by: Establishsing
a "need step" that is appropriate for that
particular audience. They will be able to analyze and angle speech
topics to the interests
and knowledge of the individual audience using appropriate language, structure
and visual
aids. They will be able to analyze audiences according to demographics.
I will assess this by: Quizzes.
By submitted exercises on introductions, conclusions,
topic development based upon demographic analysis. The speeches will
present materials
that are new and interesting and at the knowledge and understanding level
of the target
audience. The speeches will gain the attention of the audience members
and not offend.
The evidence of the student's skill achievement is: They
will correctly complete and submit
the exercises that are assigned in the course and from the website.
That the actual speeches
are positively received. That the support materials used are at the
appropriate level for the
target audience and gain their attention and interest. And the quizzes
earn a grade of 75 or above.
4. The student will be able to : demonstrate listening skills.
The student will learn this skill by:
Submitting a typed evaluation of an outside speaker. Give
appropriate feedback to the speaker. Evaluate information presented
as accurate and credible.
I will assess this by: the evaluation
of an outside speaker that is submitted for grading. The
appropriate feedback given to the individual speeches. And by listening
to the speeches
presented in the classroom.
The evidence of the student's skill achievement is: The
evaluation of an outside speaker
receives a grade of "C" or above. The feedback in the form of questions
and comments is
appropriate and not offensive.
5. The student will be able to: Defend a position, a point of view or an interpretation.
The student will learn this skill by: Presenting
a persuasion speech which has an appropriate
and effective structure and a viable solution to the problem. A full
sentence outline with a
bibliography is submitted at the time of the presentation.
I will assess this by: Assessing if
both inductive and deductive reasoning is used. The subject
and support materials are appropriate for the particular audience and matches
the criteria as
published in the textbook, in the syllabus and on the website and discussed
in lecture. All the
speeches must by researched with information from credible sources, having
an appropriate
structure and a viable solution to the presented problem. The speech
must be directed to this
particular audience and have a dynamic presentation.
The evidence of the student's skill achievement is: The
persuasion speech fulfills all the
criteria and recieves a grade of 'C" or above. The full sentence
outline is submitted at the time
of presentation. A bibliography is included in the outline and is
from credible and recent sources.
Source materials are cited in the actual presentation. The audience
understands the language
and reasoning. And ultimately, the feedback is positive.
