           understood in terms of its causes.

____  I have clearly stated the purpose of my speech.

____  My thesis statement is written as a complete declarative sentence.

____  My introduction gains attention and interest, establishes by credibility, and previews
           the main points of my message.

____  The first main point of my speech describes the present condition, situation, or event.

____ Subsequent main points of my speech explain the causes of the condition, situation, or
            event.

____  The main points containing causes are arranged either categorically in terms of their
            importance or chronologically (see categorical and sequential designs).

____  I have been careful not to oversimplify the cause-effect relationships.

____  I have positioned my subpoints under the main points to which they are related.

____  My conclusion contains a summary that recaps my message and remarks that reflect
            on the meaning and significance of the speech.

____  I have provided transitions where they are needed to make my speech flow smoothly.

____  I have compiled a list of works consulted in the preparation of my speech and added them
           to the bottom of the formal outline.
