Week 1  January 14-18

Organization and scope of course

Complete Audience analysis Questionnaire from chapter 5 on website.  Print off and complete.  Bring to class on January 20.

Chapter 1,  Public Speaking and You.  Discussion of communication and self-introductory speech.  Answer review questions on chapter 1 from the website and turn in on January 23.  Must be typed.

 

Week 2  January 225

Speech #1, Self-Introductory Speech   1-3 minutes following criteria in chapter 3.  This speech is recorded. 

Personal Inventory Worksheet and Self-Awareness Inventory sheet on website, chapter 3. Complete the self-intro evaluation in chapter 3 on the website after you have viewed your own speech.  This must be typed and hand in on Friday.

Discuss ethics in speech (chapter 1) and coping with speech fright (chapter 2).  Complete “anxiety survey” from chapter 2 in the book page 36-37 and bring results to class for discussion of speech fright.  Also write a 500 word  essay on what you have learned about yourself and what you might do to eliminate anxiety from this survey.  Submit by Friday.

Quiz 1 over chapters 1 and 2 after  completion of chapter discussion. 

 

Week 3  January 28 – February 1

Chapter 4, Becoming a Better Listener.  Complete listening survey from chapter 4 on page 82.  Write a 500 word essay on your listening problems and what you might do to correct them.  Submit by Friday. 

Speech #2, impromptu.

 

 

Week 4  February 4-8

Chapter 5, Adapting to Your Audience and Situation

Complete College Student Attitude Questionnaire on website, chapter 5 and submit by Friday.

 

Week 5  February 11-15

Chapter 6, Finding Your Topic and Chapter 7, Researching your Topic

Complete Trivia worksheets which will be handed out in class.  Be sure to include your sources.

 You own personal knowledge is not acceptable.  Be sure to visit the library.

Do “ “evaluating Websites” from chapter 7 on website and submit.

Quiz 2 over chapter 3, 4, 5

Chapter 8, Supporting Your Ideas

Checklist for using supporting points and common transitions are on web under chapter 8.  They do not need to be submitted.

Chapter 14, Informative Speaking:  ethics and different speech designs with checklists are on the website, chapter 14. Read and use. You will be quizzed on these.

 

Week 6, February 18-22

Chapter 9, Structuring your Speech. 

Do Introduction and Conclusion exercise, chapter 9 website and submit.

Quiz 3 Chapters 6, 7, 8

Chapter 10, Outlining your Speech.

Complete scrambled outline from Chapter 10 and submit.

Working outline form on page 264 and on website, chapter 10  (this can be printed and used when preparing your working outline for your informative speech)

Speech #3, Informative Speech, 3-5 minutes in length

 

Week 7, February 25-29

Finish Informative Speeches

Quiz 4 chapters 9, 10, 14

 

Spring Break – no classes from Feb 29-March 9

 

Week 8  March 10-14

Chapter 13, Presenting your Speech:  Information on evaluation form, handling questions and answers appropriately, and the Dos and Don’ts for presentations on website. 

Chapter 11, Presentation Aids.  Tips for using presentation aids and creating textual graphics on chapter 11 website and on pages 306 – 311 in your textbook.  Make sure you read the criteria.

 

Week 9  March 17-90

Chapter 12. Using Language Effectively

Speech #4, Informative Speech with Visual Aid  3-5 minutes in length

This speech is recorded.  You must use at least one visual aid that uses technology (computer graphics, transparencies, videotape etc.)

Checklists for different types of speech structures on website, chapter 14.  Different speech designs are explained on pages 395-400.

Week 13  April 14-19

Finish discussion on Chapter 15, Persuasive Speaking

Checklists for persuasive structures on website, chapter 15

Chapter 16, Building Powerful Arguments

Persuasive proofs and argument abuses on website, chapter 16

Speaker Observation Paper due on April 25.  Directions on website and in syllabus.

 

Week 14 April 21- 25

Speech #6, Persuasion Speech   4 – 5 Minutes in length

Week 15  April 28 – May 2

Finish persuasion speeches

Chapter 17, Ceremonial Speaking

Quiz #6 over persuasion speaking. 

Speech #7, Ceremonial Speech 1-4 minutes in length

This speech will be given if time permits.

Self-Evaluation papers due on at last class period.  Directions on website and in syllabus.

 

Final Exams May 8, a Thursday at 8 am.  In same room as class.

Remember , if you have not been absent during the semester and have a class average of B or above, you are exempt from taking the final.  But that also means that all work must be submitted before the last day of class for the final grade to be calculated.

           

 

 

All exams are in the same classrooms as the class has been held.  If you have not missed any classes throughout the semester, you automatically receive 10 extra points.
