There are so many distractions in our everyday life – from getting our Starbucks to finishing today’s homework, from deciding what to wear to the latest news on “Brangelina”, the Middle East, and college football. The world keeps us running at a fast pace and it is never going to slow down; but luckily Christ did offer us a way to get out off the hamster wheel.
In Matthew chapter six, Christ boldly proclaims, “Do not worry, saying ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these thing the Gentiles seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
What a wonderful, comforting encouragement from our God. He makes our life so simple – seek first the kingdom and everything else will come. The problem is that being human, it isn’t that easy to ignore the distractions whether they are important or trivial. We worry about ourselves, about our friends and family.
What college should I go to? What major should I pick? Do I have enough money? Are my parents proud of me? Do I want to buy the new iPod? Will Notre Dame ever win a Bowl Game? Is American Idol on tonight? Do I have time to go to Mass today? Am I a good friend?
During this weekend, we hope to turn the volume down in your mind on all of your cares and concerns. To help you to seek first the kingdom of God and to find Christ in the midst of the “everydayness”.
