COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This is a one-credit course meeting twice a week through October 28, 2004.

 

This course is designed to assist students in their adjustment to college life at Holy Cross College.  It assists students in personal growth, decision-making, time management, short term and long term goal setting, and academic planning.

OBJECTIVES

 

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

¨      Establish and clarify personal goals, and create a plan for success.

¨      Apply interpersonal relationship skills to college success.

¨      Effectively balance, home/work/social demands and college studies.

¨      Identify attitudes and behaviors which contribute to the development of a skilled learner.

¨      Demonstrate knowledge and appropriate use of on and off-campus support systems.

EXPECTATIONS

 

ό      Come to each session prepared, with assignments read and completed.  Come with text, notebook, pen, planner, etc.

ό      Class participation is required.

ό      All written assignments must be typed (12 font), double spaced, and grammatically correct.

ό      Your name, course section, and date must be in the upper right hand corner of your assignments.

ό      Late work is not accepted.  Missed in-class assignments, tests, and quizzes due to absence may NOT be made up.

 

 

WRITTEN PROJECT – A REFLECTION PAPER

 

This paper should be five to six pages in length..

The content is to include:

q       Your plan or vision for the next 2 – 4 years.  This needs to include short and long term academic and career goals.

q       The steps you are taking to change attitudes, study habits, use of time, and other skills you are developing to make your long-term goal a reality.

q       The knowledge you have gained from guest speakers, the Focus Careers program, and other assessments used in the course, beyond the text.

q       From research, include two or more colleges/universities you are beginning to target for transfer after your Associates Degree is earned.  

 

 

ATTENDANCE

 

One to fifteen minutes late is considered tardy.  Two tardies = 1 absence.  More than fifteen minutes late = 1 absence.  More than two absences will result in an “F” for the discretionary portion of your final grade.

Meet for class in the library.  Submit completed library lab at the end of the session.

Read chapters 8, 10, 11

Complete Learning Styles Test.

September 14

Tuesday

Meet with Tim Ryan, HCC Career Center.  Begin FOCUS work.  Write a report on your learning styles and submit with completed tests (due September 21).

Read chapters 14 – 16.

Tuesday

Learning styles report due today.  Review for test on chapters 8, 10 – 11, 14 – 16.

September 23

Thursday
